Interview with David Soh Poh Huat

1. Congratulations on the release of your book and on winning the Sahitya Sparsh Awards – Season 3. How does this recognition feel for you as an author?
I am deeply honored to receive this award and grateful to be recognized by the international community.

2. What inspired you to write Scam the SCAMMERs and address such a powerful social awareness topic?
Scams have existed for many years, and I felt that not enough was being done by individual countries or the international community. After my book was published, I was glad to see that more countries began taking action in this area.

3. In your book, you mention that everyone carries a “scam virus.” Can you explain what this means and why it is important for readers to understand?
The “scam virus” is a simple metaphor. Sometimes we unknowingly share untrue news or misinformation with friends, which can result in them losing money or trust in others. These small actions may seem harmless, but we may not realize that we are, in a way, ‘scamming’ others.

4. Scams are rising worldwide. What do you believe is the biggest reason people still fall victim to them today?
Many people struggle financially due to the high cost of living and are desperate to make ends meet. This desperation often leads them into the hands of scammers. Another major reason is job searching, where people believe they have secured employment but instead end up being scammed.

5. Your message to scammers about karma was very strong. What motivated you to include such a direct warning?
My late father always taught me to do good, and that goodness will eventually return to us. I have witnessed how people who harm others—whether at work or in their personal lives—often face retribution themselves, sometimes affecting their family members as well.

6. Do you feel global cooperation against scams is possible? What steps should governments or individuals take?
Yes, global cooperation is possible. We need an international body, similar to the United Nations, specifically dedicated to curbing scams. Currently, some countries harbor scammers under the pretext of attracting investors due to large financial inflows, which is deeply concerning. Countries and individuals should be ashamed of endorsing or protecting scammers.

7. What was the most challenging part of writing this book, especially when dealing with sensitive social issues?
The biggest challenge was addressing the issue from a global perspective rather than focusing on local problems, while also ensuring that no particular country was unfairly targeted.

8. What key message do you hope readers will take away after finishing Scam the SCAMMERs?
Readers should actively work to counter scammers by staying alert and reporting them to the authorities—for example, by obtaining scam-related account details and submitting them to law enforcement.

9. Are you planning to write more books related to social awareness or continue this theme?
(Response pending)

10. Are you active on social media, and how can readers connect with you for updates or discussions?

11. Where can readers purchase your book, both in digital and print formats?
Scam the SCAMMERs by David Soh Poh Huat is available on Amazon.sg in both digital and print formats.

12. Thank you for answering our questions. Is there anything else you would like to share with your readers or future fans?
We need to be brave and write about social issues as an avenue to create awareness and drive positive change.
