Author Interview with Sunita Lad Bhamray
Congratulations on the release of your book Kalee and the Mysterious Twins: Keepers of the Big Secret! How does it feel to see it out in the world?
Ans: It is a feeling of pure happiness. Although this is my fifth published book, every release fills me with tremendous gratitude. Each time my work reaches readers, I feel thankful that my story has been given life.
A big congratulations on winning the Sahitya Sparsh Awards – Season 3. What does this recognition mean to you as an author?
Ans: Thank you very much for this recognition. I feel deeply honored to receive the Sahitya Sparsh Award, and it motivates me to continue writing meaningful stories for young readers.
What inspired you to write this story about Kalee, the mysterious twins, and their secret mission?
Ans: Nature has always been a major source of inspiration for my writing, and all my books contain elements connected to the natural world. Since I was clear that this book was meant for middle-grade readers, I reflected on how many children today grow up in concrete jungles with limited exposure to nature.
Keeping this in mind, I decided to create a mystery novel set against the backdrop of a large garden, incorporating references to a wide variety of plants, trees, and flowers.
The book carries a strong message about environmental awareness. Why was this theme important for you to highlight in a children’s adventure?
Ans: As an author, one has a responsibility toward one’s readers. It was important for me to ensure that the message did not sound preachy, while still allowing readers to naturally infer the importance of environmental stewardship through the story.
Can you tell us about your creative process? How did you bring the world of Kalee and the secret children to life?
Ans: I began with the central idea of a garden. Once that foundation was established, I was able to weave all four mysteries in the story around it. Since the book blends fact and fiction, I also undertook extensive research into the unique properties of plants that needed to be incorporated into the plot.
Do you have a favorite scene or moment in the book that you enjoyed writing the most?
Ans: There are many favorite moments in the book. However, I especially enjoyed writing about the transformation of my protagonist, Kalee — a pre-teen girl from a dysfunctional family — as she evolves into a brave and confident heroine.
What do you hope young readers will take away from this story?
Ans: I hope young readers find this book to be an easy and enjoyable read, with clear language and fun moments they can relate to. Most importantly, I hope they understand the value of being close to nature, engaging in outdoor play, and cherishing natural surroundings.
Are there any real-life influences or personal experiences that shaped the characters or themes in the book?
Ans: Yes, I have drawn from my own life to shape the protagonist. Growing up surrounded by a large, beautiful garden and spending time with make-believe friends helped me develop the mysterious characters and themes in the story.
Many readers are curious to know if there will be a sequel or continuation of Kalee’s adventures. Is that something you are planning?
Ans: Yes, there will be a sequel to the book. I am currently in the process of developing it.
As a writer of children’s literature, what challenges do you face, and how do you overcome them?
Ans: One important aspect of writing for middle-grade readers is using language appropriately. Pre-teens are perceptive, curious, and eager to ask questions, yet they are also burdened with heavy academic demands. It is therefore essential to avoid sounding textbook-like while ensuring the story remains engaging and entertaining.
